Mission
Statement
The Center for the Humanities provides visibility and focus for humanities
activities and attract resources for those. The Center presents varied
conferences and symposia. It sponsors the Monday Noon Series, showcasing
researchers and performers from the humanities/arts. Several Series
seasons approach topics of increasing concern (e.g., nature, water)
from interdisciplinary perspectives. The Center coordinates the Poetry
& Short Story Reading Series, with authors reading their original
works. The Center houses the editorial offices of "Theory and
Society," an interdisciplinary journal of social theory and practices,
to further social inquiry. In 2005, the Center shows the film "Path
to War," followed by discussion on "How the US Goes to War."
Devoted to exploring urban life since its inception, the Center presents
its 11th "What is a City?" conference fall 2005 with the
theme "Urban Women." The 12th "What is a City?"
conference, fall 2006, has the theme "Urban Films and Photography." |
