Mission Statement

The Institute for the Humanities fosters development of a broad, highly innovative humanities culture at Northwestern University. Established in 1992 (as the Center for the Humanities) in response to radical challenges that redefined the boundaries and practices of the humanities, the Institute invites participation by faculty members and students in the College of Arts and Sciences, and other schools, such as Journalism, Law, Music, and Speech, as well as the Library. The Institute's diverse activities not only address current interpretive and theoretical concerns, but also promote an interdiscisplinary conversation among humanists working with different materials and texts. Each year the Institute announces three, quarterly interpretive themes. The topics are designed to spark wide-ranging interdisciplinary debate among Northwestern Humanists.
