Mission
Statement
University at Buffalo's (UB) Humanities Institute promotes innovative cross-disciplinary research, teaching, and community programs. The Institute is committed to a broad conception of the humanities, with a focus on original, theoretically informed thinking across disciplines and on critical analysis of experimental art. It aspires to be a venue where intellectual, aesthetic, and political avant-gardes intersect with Buffalo's cultural life. The Institute highlights innovative literature, music, theater, architecture, visual arts, and the new media, in which UB and Buffalo have achieved widespread recognition. It builds on UB's rich tradition of ground-breaking research and avant-garde art and is supported by extensive library resources, most notably the outstanding Rare Books, Poetry, and James Joyce collections.
To meet these goals, the Institute sponsors a diverse range of programs including public lectures, annual scholarly conferences, research groups, publications, scholar sessions, book exhibits, distinguished visiting scholars, fellowship programs for faculty and doctoral students, and community-wide initiatives. |
