Mission Statement

The Center for Place, Culture and Politics is an interdisciplinary center providing an exciting intellectual forum for the discussion of a wide range of vital contemporary issues. The center's name and focus express the fact that at the beginning of the twenty-first century, questions of space and place have come to play a crucial role in the public culture. As art historian John Berger noted in the 1970's, "it is space not time that hides the consequences" of social action from us. The cultural turn in intellectual circles in recent decades has therefore been fueled by a widespread rewriting of culture in a highly evocative spatial language. At the same time, many of the most pressing political issues today - globalization and homelessness, environmental change and the future of nation states, cyberculture and the transnational flows of goods, people and contraband - occupy the nexus between place, culture and politics.
