Mission Statement

The Humanities Institute was founded in 1986 to promote interdisciplinary research and discussion in forums both inside and outside the Scripps College curriculum. The Institute sponsors conferences, lectures, seminars, readings, exhibitions, film series, the "Issues in the Humanities" luncheons, and a Junior Fellowship program. Its programs bring to Scripps College writers, artists, and scholars who are making singular contributions in their disciplines, even reforming the shape of their disciplines. They are invited not only to present their current work, but also to discuss its bearing on broader intellectual and social issues.
