Mission
Statement
U.C. Riverside's Center for Ideas and Society was established in 1989 in response
to the Humanities Research Initiative of the U.C. Office of the President and the report
of the U.C. Riverside Chancellor's Task Force on Planning.
The Center's mission is to foster collaborative and interdisciplinary research, pedagogy,
and creative production in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at U.C. Riverside, as
well as locally, nationally, and internationally. It is our conviction that such work will
advance our understanding of human experience and cultural production, a task to which the
traditional disciplines and methodologies have come to seem increasingly inadequate.
The Center is distinguished from other humanities research institutes by the importance it
attaches to work in the arts and social sciences for humanistic interdisciplinary
collaboration, as well as by its emphasis on intellectual history and the exploration of
the social context of ideas, artifacts, and events.
The Center accomplishes its charge through the programs it sponsors or co-funds:
- Residency Fellowships for U.C.R. faculty and graduate students
- Distinguished Visiting Faculty Fellowships
- Faculty and graduate student Focused Research Groups
- Conferences
- Lectures, Seminars, and Colloquia
- Performances, Readings, Screenings, and Exhibitions
- Curriculum and Pedagogy Initiatives
- The Distinguished Humanistic Achievement Award
- The Publication of Occasional Papers
- The Center also administers grants, including:
- The Rockefeller Residency Site Program
- The Ford Foundation Education, Media, Arts, and Culture Grant
- The Hewlett Grant
- The Alpha Cluster Grant |
