CHCI > ACLS Partnership

The Program
We are pleased to announce a new partnership between the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). ACLS has entered into this partnership with CHCI as well as the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC).

In this new partnership - now in its pilot year - we will work to offer CHCI member organizations as host sites for individual applicants to the ACLS Recent Doctoral Recipients (RDR) fellowship program.

The RDR program provides funding each year for 25 scholars pursuing postdoctoral research in the humanities and related social sciences. Each of these fellows may elect to associate themselves with a host organization, typically a research institution or library. We are inviting all CHCI member organizations - including international members - to identify themselves as possible host sites for RDR fellows. The ACLS program provides funding for the fellowship stipend, while CHCI member organizations interested in hosting a fellow are asked to provide a minimum level of infrastructural support.

We hope that more CHCI members will join the program as we develop this important and valuable program with our partners at ACLS. Members interested in participating in the program in 2009-10 and in future years may submit a statement of interest at any time, per the guidelines in the following section. Please also review the current organizational descriptions here for examples of how to format your organization's entry.

How to Participate
Interested CHCI member organizations are invited to identify themselves as possible host sites for RDR fellows. To do so, we ask that each interested organization provide a brief statement on the types of infrastructural and programmatic support they will be able to offer RDR fellows. Please limit your statement to one short paragraph. Based on this information, we will create profiles of each prospective CHCI host, and this information will be provided, in turn, to RDR fellowship applicants via a secure page on the ACLS website. Applicants will be asked to choose and rank the organizations in which they are interested, and the "matches" will be made each spring.

RDR host sites should be able to provide the following minimum infrastructural support for RDR Fellows:

1) An office
2) Internet and telephone access
3) Library access
4) Opportunities to participate in Center programs, such as lectures, seminars/workshops
5) Access to medical insurance for the Fellow and family

Organizations may choose to offer additional benefits, such as a topped-up stipend or housing, travel, and research support.

In your statement, please clearly indicate your ability to meet the minimum requirements listed above. Please be specific about each item. For example, please indicate whether you are able to offer paid health insurance, or whether fellows will have access to a self-paid policy via your institution. We encourage you, also, to provide information on any additional support you may be able to offer to RDR Fellows, and about the unique environment your center or institute may offer. This information may make your site more attractive to more fellows.

RDR fellows may not be asked to teach, but can be asked to present their research to faculty or student groups, or participate in an ongoing program, such as a seminar.

As this program is an ongoing one, CHCI members may elect to participate at any time. However, the deadline for the 2008-09 fellowship year has passed, and statements of interest submitted after January 1, 2008 will be grouped with the 2009-10 fellowship year.

For inclusion in the 2009-10 and/or 2010-11 program years, please send your statement to chci@duke.edu on or before Monday July 7, 2008. Please contact us if you need additional information.

Statements from CHCI members participating in the 2008-09 fellowship year can be found here.
